Web developers are innovative, methodical and directive.
You need:
- logical thinking to analyze complex problems and create and verify solutions
- patience and persistence when developing applications
- attention to detail to avoid errors that cost time and money
- the ability to interpret user needs
- knowledge of user experience (UX) techniques
- speaking, listening and writing skills
- interpersonal and teamwork skills.
To do well in this field, you should enjoy learning new computer languages and programming styles, creative problem-solving, being precise and taking a structured approach to your work.
You will participate in an off-site practicum at a participating corporation or business, giving you a realistic taste of what it is like to work in the technology industry and the opportunity to make connections with potential future employers.
Upon successfully completing this program, you'll be awarded a SAIT Web Developer certificate.

Courses
The Web Developer certificate requires 15 credits (eight courses) to complete.
The program spans 23 weeks over two 15-week semesters, with one semester of full-time study and a second semester eight-week practicum placement.

This course will introduce industry standard content management systems used to create websites by experimenting with themes and templates. Advanced concepts will investigate large customized local and remote content management systems. |

This course is designed to equip students with essential skills for modern web development by focusing on core tools, practices, and workflows. Students will learn how to effectively set up and configure development environments, use Git for version control, and collaborate on projects using Agile methodologies and project management tools. The course covers cloud fundamentals, enabling students to deploy websites on hosting platforms. Additionally, students will develop research skills to solve technical challenges and write clear, actionable user stories for effective project management. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of how to manage the entire web development lifecycle-from setup to deployment, while adhering to industry best practices. |

Students will learn the foundational principles of web design, focusing on creating well-structured, accessible, and visually engaging web pages. Students will learn the fundamental concepts of web development, including client-side and server-side programming with various frameworks and databases. This course is a culmination of the web development program, challenging students to apply and synthesize their skills in a full-scale, production-ready web application. Students will design, develop, test, and deploy a project of their choosing that meets real-world standards, showcasing their proficiency in both client-side and server-side development, databases, API integration, and responsive design. Projects should demonstrate not only technical proficiency but also creative problem-solving and user-centered design practices. |

Progression
You must attain a PGPA and/or a CGPA of 2.0 or better each semester and pass the prerequisite courses to progress through the program.
To qualify for graduation, you must pass all courses, attain a CGPA of 2.0 or better and complete course requirements within the prescribed timelines.
Admission requirements
Applicants educated in Canada
Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency and completion of one of the following courses or equivalents:
- at least 60% in English Language Arts 30-1 or English Language Arts 30-2, or
- a minimum of two years of post-secondary education from a recognized university, institute, or college.
SAIT accepts high school course equivalents for admission for applicants educated outside Alberta.
All applicants who were educated outside of Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide proof they meet the program admission requirements outlined above with an international document assessment. Find accepted educational documents and assessment options.
SAIT may also accept courses completed at certain international post-secondary institutions.

Costs
2025/26 tuition and fees
The following estimated costs are effective as of July 1, 2025.
The estimated total cost of tuition and fees is based on the suggested schedule of study. Following a modified schedule will impact the fees you pay per semester and may alter final costs.
Domestic students
*.5 indicates a combination of full-time semester(s) and part-time semester(s) in the same academic year. In many cases, students are completing a practicum during their part-time semester. Part-time students are those taking less than nine (9) course credits in a semester. You are not eligible for the UPass during a part-time semester.
The program total is based on the estimated amount you will pay if you enter this program during the 2025/26 academic year. The program total amount listed on your letter of admission may appear higher. This amount is your maximum tuition guarantee for the program. SAIT will not exceed this maximum, regardless of changes in tuition and fees between academic years.
Books and supplies are approximately $1,000 - $1,500 per full-time year.
This program uses e-books for learning, which will be provided to you.
