Mental health at SAIT

Societal stigma has created a barrier for many people seeking support when it comes to mental health. However, your mental health is just as important as your physical health. It can impact how you think, feel and act, including how you manage stress in your day-to-day life. Even if your mental health is in a good place, it’s important to develop strategies to manage your mental health should things change.

Student Development and Counselling can help you develop new skills and strategies to prevent or manage times when you experience poor mental health. If you are experiencing challenges with your mental health or want to improve your overall wellbeing, please use the following resources or reach out to us. We’re here to help.

Positive mental health and success

Student success isn't just about grades or getting the next big internship. It’s about flourishing and finding joy in everyday moments. Positive mental health is the key. We encourage you to look within yourself, discover your passions, and embrace who you truly are.

We want you to imagine this: waking up each day excited to learn, not just for the sake of productivity and getting the highest grades, but to explore what brings you satisfaction and fulfillment. Whether it’s connecting with friends, enjoying a favourite hobby, or simply appreciating what’s around you, these experiences can boost your overall wellbeing.

When you prioritize your mental health, you open a door of opportunity to an exciting and more meaningful life. When you take the time to nourish your mind, body, and spirit, your definition of success changes into something truly incredible.

The eight dimensions of wellness

Your wellbeing can be affected by many things. In order to keep your mental health in check, we recommend you look at other aspects of your health too – what we refer to as the eight dimensions of wellness.

First off, you don’t need social media to be social! Quite often excessive use of social media is quite the opposite.

Social wellness means having healthy relationships, staying connected with your friends and loved ones, and being content with who you are when you are interacting with them.

Where can I get social support at SAIT?

There are so many great ways to meet other students at SAIT.

Check out the Student Life page to explore all of the different resources. Each one of them offers unique opportunities to meet others.

Saitsa student clubs is another great way to connect with people with similar interests or participate in Trojans Sports to stay active while connecting with others.

Are you interested in working on your English or would like to help others practice their skills? Consider joining the English Conversation Partners program or one of our other student engagement programs.

It’s important to continuously keep your brain active by learning and considering different perspectives. You can do this by interacting with different people, travelling to other parts of the world, taking courses to broaden our horizons and learning new skills.

The Lamb Learner Success Centre is a key resource on campus. Discover how you learn best with a Learning Strategist or find a tutor. Need accommodations? Connect with an Accessibility Services Advisor.

You can also engage in conversation with your classmates as part of the English Conversations Partners program, take out a Library book on a topic you’d like to know more about, or bump up your resume with an activity that’s eligible for Co-Curricular Record (CCR)

More than that, the Study Abroad has great opportunities to interact with people from around the globe, right from the comfort of your own home!

As humans we experience many different emotions every day. Knowing how to acknowledge, embrace, express and manage these is key. By engaging in self-care and stress management techniques, we can achieve emotional wellness. What’s your balance?

Where can I get emotional support at SAIT?

Check-in with us at SAIT’s Student Development and Counselling. We provide free and confidential counselling to SAIT students and can discuss a wide range of topics with you. Anything from personal concerns, concerns about school (for example, presentation or test-taking nerves), and your career path (for example, feeling like your program may not be a good fit for you).

We offer appointments in-person, on the phone or via zoom. We also offer a variety of free tools to help you build resilience and get closer to achieving emotional wellness.

Natoysopoyiis - "Holy Wind Lodge" and the Interfaith Centre can also both support your emotional wellness.

Most of us know the basics of physical wellness – eat healthily, move more, drink lots of water, get enough sleep, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and get regular check-ups.

After all, take care of your body, and it will take care of you.

Where can I get physical support at SAIT?

Hitting the gym is fine, but “exercise” is so much more than the gym. Aim to move more – if you can, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or bike to the corner store instead of driving. Small efforts add up to make a big difference.

Make healthier food choices 80% of the time – and don’t stress when you’ve had two cookies instead of one. Get a water bottle that inspires you to drink more. Avoid smoking and get familiar with Canada’s low-risk drinking guidelines to limit the potential negative effects of alcohol consumption.

Stay active at SAIT by checking out the gym or taking a walk around campus, pick from several healthy food stalls on campus, and visit the SAIT Health Clinic if you have a health concern. Also, make sure to take advantage of your health and dental benefits

Financial wellness isn’t about having lots of money, but rather being satisfied with your financial situation. It is also building your financial literacy and awareness.

In other words, being knowledgeable about savings, understanding taxes, and avoiding debt as much as possible.

Where can I get financial support at SAIT?

Being a student is expensive. Let SAIT help you find the balance.

Make sure to apply for SAIT student awards you are eligible for, and check-in with SAIT’s Financial Advising team to help build a budget or apply for government loans, grants, and bursaries.

Also, check out the financial awareness online series, a collaboration between Saitsa and the Financial Advising team.

Spiritual wellness is about finding a sense of meaning, peace, and purpose in your life by identifying and establishing your values and principles. In other words, what is really important to you?

Spirituality is not only found in religion, but can also be found in a community of like-minded people – a volunteer group, for example. However you choose to work on your spiritual wellness, enjoy the journey.

One aspect of environmental wellness is ensuring we have clean air, food and water and we leave it that way for generations to come.

Another aspect is feeling safe wherever you are - on campus, at home or anywhere else.

We don’t have control of everything in our environment, but we do have control over some parts. Go ahead, set the scene – create an environment that helps you thrive and check out this video by creating your own Zen Den Jing’s Zen Den in the den: A Place to Chill | Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (campuswell.ca)

Outreach Wellness Leaders (OWLs)

Who they are and what they do?

Our Outreach Wellness Leaders (OWLs) are dedicated students who strive to increase mental health awareness and wellness on campus. You can typically find OWLs on campus at outreach tables about various mental health awareness initiatives.

OWLs are not counsellors and do not give mental health advice. Instead, they work with their peers to increase their mental health awareness and help-seeking behaviors.

Our OWLs enrich this program through their personal experiences and professional experiences.

Would you like to join the OWLs team?

Oki, Âba wathtech, Danit'ada, Tawnshi, Hello.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
