Life at SAIT

Tyler teaches in the Journalism program and has been with SAIT since 2004.

Tyler is an exceptional mentor who gives his students a holistic view of the magazine industry (in-print and media) and employs teaching techniques emphasizing collaboration over traditional lectures. He values a human-centred approach to teaching, creativity, dedication, and passion in his students.

Education

Tyler has a bachelor's in commerce, an MBA, and is pursuing a PhD in Journalism Studies (expected completion 2025).  The focus of his research is on rural community news.

Professional accomplishments

Tyler has also won several awards throughout his distinguished career. A few highlights include the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, the 2018 Cisco Chair in e-learning at SAIT, and the Joseph Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship. Most recently, he won the privileged Top Student Paper Award in the journalism studies division at the International Communication Association’s annual conference.

His research interests in local and community journalism extend to a broader inquiry about information ecosystems in rural communities. Tyler has worked on projects involving Alberta politics, visual semiology, misinformation, and disinformation. His PhD research examines the emergence of new deserts in rural Canadian communities. SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
