Cutting-edge learning facilities

AltaLink Simulator Lab

Sponsored by AltaLink, SAIT became the first Canadian post-secondary institution to have a leading-edge simulator. With this innovative technology, our Electrical Engineering Technology students develop a holistic understanding of complex power systems and simulate various realistic and real-time scenarios.

You will also gain experience modeling the management of electricity from various energy sources, including wind, solar, natural gas, coal and nuclear.

Two Electronics Engineering students work in a SAIT electrical lab.Electrical Engineering Technology labs

With seven state-of-the-art labs, our electrical students train in three major areas of electrical engineering: power systems, electrical design, and control and automation. In these labs, you will have a safe and controlled environment to gain hands-on experience with industry-sponsored equipment.

Fundamental Electrical labs

Here, you’ll study the fundamentals of electrical practices, power electronics, digital electronics and electrical circuit analysis with hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, motor starters and more.

Schneider Electric labs

You'll learn all about rotating machines, transformers and power systems in this lab.

You will study machine performance and characteristics under various load conditions using LabVolt training equipment.

You'll learn about the application, safe operation and programming of VFD drives, motor soft starters, and Schneider Electric motor control centres.

Finally, you'll use Fluke digital multimeters and Fluke power quality analyzers to perform tests on transformers of various sizes. Examine power systems using SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories) protective relays, ISA T1000 test sets, and software, including ETAP and AcSELerator relay-assistant software.

Rockwell PLC lab

In this lab, you will learn programmable logic controller (PLC) Contrologix applications and become familiar with the Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus operator-interface terminal using Rockwell FactoryTalk View Studio software.

Schneider Electric PLC lab

This lab will familiarize you with premium Unity Pro applications by developing a project using basic instructions for the Schneider Electric Unity Pro system.

PC lab

Computer programs are used to help you understand the fundamentals of circuit design and electrical design. We use Multisim to teach you how to design and simulate electrical circuits. You’ll also learn AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical software to create and draw electrical designs. Finally, we use Luxicon software to teach you the lighting design basics.

Oki, Âba wathtech, Danit'ada, Tawnshi, Hello.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
