The Alberta Bureau of International Education (ABIE) will lead growth and diversity in Alberta’s post-secondary international studies

Today, SAIT welcomed Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Advanced Education, to the Johnson-Cobbe Energy Centre to announce the creation of the Alberta Bureau of International Education (ABIE). Through this $1.5 million investment, SAIT will help establish an independent board-governed bureau of representatives from post-secondary institutions and industry stakeholders. This investment presents an exciting opportunity for Alberta’s polytechnics, colleges and universities to expand our capacity to grow and diversify international student enrolment.

Developing Alberta’s place on the world stage

“Through an overarching commitment to international education, Alberta’s post-secondary institutions create stronger international ties for the province, boost the global competitiveness of our region and help bring vital academic, economic and social benefit to our communities. SAIT looks forward to collaborating with the Government of Alberta and our post-secondary partners to develop Alberta’s place on the world stage regarding international education and promote our province as a first-choice education destination for international students,” says Dr. David Ross, SAIT President and CEO.

The Bureau will also provide increased international learning opportunities for Albertans.

The SAIT community has seen first-hand how a strong international student population contributes to a rich learning environment by providing students the opportunity to develop cross-cultural awareness and broaden their worldview. The global economy demands an interconnected world — with increased access to international post-secondary education at its core.

International research and study abroad partnerships with industry and education providers will expand our reach and have the potential to make real and lasting impact in Alberta through talent, expertise, innovation and ideas.

Minister Nicolaides praised Alberta’s already rich landscape for international studies and readiness to showcase the diverse post-secondary options available in our province. ABIE will work to increase competitiveness in attracting international students to Alberta by highlighting the innovation and strength of our robust education system to students around the world.

Oki, Âba wathtech, Danit'ada, Tawnshi, Hello.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
