Understanding your grades

Grades are a significant part of your student life — make sure you understand how they work.

Grading system

SAIT uses a 4-point grade point average (GPA) grading system. Check your course outline for an overview.

Degree Awarded GPA The weighted grade point average for all courses you complete that are used to award your credential.

Term GPA (TGPA) The weighted GPA for all credit courses you complete in a term.

Total Institutional GPA (TIGPA) The weighted GPA for all credit courses you complete at SAIT.

After you have attempted a minimum of nine credits in your program, your TGPA or TIGPA must be 2.0 or higher to be in good academic standing and progress through your program.

Your academic standing will then be recalculated at the end of each term.

You will continue to be in good academic standing if your TGPA and TIGPA is at least 2.0 for the term. Review AC.3.1.1 Grading and Progression Policy and Procedure for more information.

SAIT’s Office of the Ombudsperson

The Office of the Ombudsperson can assist you in navigating SAIT policies and processes and can help you figure out your options. Students can contact the Ombudsperson to discuss any issue related to SAIT, including grade reviews, admissions, academic and non-academic misconduct hearings, and more.

Calculate a weighted grade

Marks for quizzes, assignments, projects and exams are usually found in your mySAIT account or Brightspace (D2L).

A weighted grading system is used to calculate those marks. In this system, course assessments are assigned different values.

For example, an in-class quiz may have a value of 5%, a mid-term exam may have a value of 25%. Calculating weighted grades gives you a snapshot of your academic standing at any point in your semester and allows you to act early if things aren’t going to plan.

To calculate a weighted grade, multiply the percent earned in each assessment by the weight assigned to it. Add the totals to get the grade average for the course. Try this: grade calculator tool.

Academic probation

If your TGPA or TIGPA is below 2.0, you will be placed on academic probation for that term.

You can continue to register for courses while on academic probation.

If you're on academic probation already and your TGPA and TIGPA is less than 2.0 for the term, you will be academically withdrawn from SAIT.

Once you’re withdrawn, you must wait eight calendar months before you can take any credit courses or credit programs at SAIT.
