SAIT ranked as one of Canada's top research colleges
The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is one of Canada's top 10 research colleges Research Infosource Inc.’s Top 50 Research Colleges 2020 ranking was released Tuesday, Dec. 15 with SAIT taking seventh spot. The ranking is part of the annual Canada's Innovation Leaders (CIL) report recognizing leading research universities, corporations, hospitals and colleges enhancing Canada's global competitiveness in the knowledge economy.
SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) develops new or improved technologies in response to the innovation needs of industry.
“The world has changed and the research needs of our industry partners are accelerating,” says Tom Bornhorst, Vice President, Corporate Development, Applied Research and International. “Our research managers and the entire team at ARIS consistently meet those needs and find cost-effective solutions to the challenges the world faces today.”
ARIS comprises 50,000 square feet of specialized research labs and facilities supporting a variety of industries and organizations to move their products from concept to prototype.
“Industry partnerships are foundational to SAIT — and it’s those relationships we’ve built with industry, governments and other key stakeholders that have set us apart throughout our 104-year history,” says Bornhorst. “This recognition highlights our unwavering commitment to collaboration and to build what’s possible, together.”
Teams of ARIS researchers, students and industry partners work in established and emerging research areas, including information technology; unmanned systems; design, fabrication and testing; environmental technologies; clean energy solutions; green building technologies, and our newest research area focused on advanced manufacturing and materials.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.
We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
