SAIT Annual Report 2022/23

This year, SAIT shifted from responding to COVID-19 to navigating the changing realities of a post-pandemic world.

Throughout, we have remained committed to supporting the health and well-being of our community while advancing the competitiveness of our region through innovative applied education and research.

About SAIT

Established in 1916, SAIT was the first of its kind, publicly funded technical school in North America. As a global leader in applied education and research — serving nearly 40,000 students annually — SAIT offers certificate, diploma, post diploma, apprenticeship and applied degree programs, baccalaureate degrees, corporate training and more than 1,000 continuing education courses. Beyond academic programming, SAIT has six dedicated, award-winning areas of research and capacity for new and emerging research.

Curriculum and research priorities are developed through industry partnerships to ensure graduates have the skills and knowledge required to fulfill the demand for talent. SAIT is honoured to be recognized by Mediacorp Canada Inc. as one of Alberta’s Top Employers for 2023, and to be ranked fifth by Research Infosource Inc. in the Top 50 Research Colleges in Canada for 2022. CEOWORLD Magazine ranked the SAIT School of Business #51 on the list of Best Business Schools in the World for 2023, and the School of Hospitality and Tourism placed #15 on their list of Best Hospitality and Hotel Management Schools in the World — the only Canadian school listed — for 2023.

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s (SAIT) main campus is located at 1301 16 Ave NW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada and sits on 96 acres of land overlooking the city.

In 1916, SAIT’s doors opened in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with 11 students and a mandate to train veterans returning from the First World War. Over the years, SAIT has matched community needs — as a hospital during the Spanish Flu pandemic and as a Royal Canadian Air Force Wireless Training School during the Second World War.

SAIT launched its news strategic plan New World. New Thinking  Sept. 2020. This plan builds on SAIT’s foundation of developing career-ready graduates for more than 100 years and charts a new course for the future.

SAIT’s alumni family is 275,000 strong in more than 110 countries.

91% of SAIT grads get hired and 97% recommend a SAIT education.

SAIT is home to eight academic schools:

Our School for Advanced Digital Technology is SAIT’s boldest transformation to date. It’s focus on digital skills will be a catalyst for Calgary’s talent ecosystem and our city’s ability to attract investment and diversify for the future.

SAIT is connected. With more than 100 degree, diploma, certificate, corporate training and bootcamp programs, along with our School of Hospitality and Tourism and School of Business ranked among the best in the world, and number one and two in Canada respectively, SAIT is the talent pipeline for industry.

SAIT offers three baccalaureate degrees, three applied degrees, 84 diploma and certificate programs, 27 apprenticeship trades and more than 1,100 continuing education, corporate training, camps and other open registration courses.

SAIT’s newly established Centre for Continuing Education and Professional Studies demonstrates both the passion and commitment we have for being a global leader in applied education. Maintaining relevance is critical for success. SAIT is aware of the ongoing demand for lifelong action-based learning, especially in today's rapidly evolving digital economy.

Through SAIT Corporate Training, the institution helps design, deliver, manage and sustain talent development solutions — for today and the future. Areas of training include Digital transformation, Change management, Business, Leadership, Energy & Environment, Occupational health & safety, Trades, Indigenous training, Work transition, Individual learners and Training for organizations outside Canada.

SAIT is the second largest provider of technical training in Alberta.

Through the generous support of its donors, SAIT is proud to offer more than $5 million in awards to students in almost every program.

The SAIT logo is known as the “Catalyst.” It’s forged by five s-shaped connectors representing the people and relationships that define us:

  • students
  • faculty and staff
  • alumni
  • employers and partners
  • the diverse communities we serve.

SAIT is one of Canada’s top allied research colleges, with almost 53,000 sq. ft. of specialized research labs and facilities, and full-time research staff. At ARIS (Applied Research and Innovation Services), SAIT brings industry partners together with researchers, faculty and students to develop novel technologies for commercialization in six applied research areas:

  • Green Building Technologies
  • Centre for Innovative Information Technology Solutions
  • Centre for Innovation and Research in Unmanned Systems
  • Environmental Technologies
  • Design, Fabrication and Testing
  • Centre for Energy Research and Clean Unconventional Technology Solutions

ARIS is supported by nearly $7 million in research funding a year, creates an average of 260 prototypes in the past three years and provides services to around 240 companies annually.

Oki, Âba wathtech, Danit'ada, Tawnshi, Hello.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
