Testing Services - External Exam FAQs

What is an external exam? An external exam is an examination that comes from an institution other than SAIT and requires an invigilator or proctor for supervision. (For example: exams from TRU Open Learning, Advocis, Red River College, Simon Fraser University, NAIT). They are not Distance Education exams. How do I arrange an external exam? Start by sending us an e-mail with your name, contact information and details regarding your exam(s) and institution(s). If your institution requires a completed proctor form, you can bring it to the Testing Centre or fax it to 403.284.7345. Examinations are to be arranged by you and your institution. You can schedule your exams any time during our hours of operation. Can I book an exam? Under normal circumstances, we do not take bookings for exams. Please arrange an appropriate date for you and your institution during our hours of operation and notify us of the time and date you have arranged to take your exam. Please note our hours of operation are subject to change. Is there a fee to write an external exam at SAIT? Yes, there is a $100 sitting fee to write an exam. Unless it is covered by your institution or you are an e-campus student, you must pay this fee prior to writing your exam. Please note it is the responsibility of the student or sending institution to provide a prepaid envelope (Purolator, Fed-Ex, stamps) to return any written materials required by your institution. Please inquire with your institution regarding return envelopes and postage. Can SAIT provide invigilation for online exams? Yes, we can provide examination supervision for more online courses. Please inform us of any computer software you may require for your exams to help us determine whether or not we have the resources available to accommodate the exam and/or can install them in advance. Where are the exams held? Exams are held at the main SAIT campus in the Heart Building at MC 221. Do I need to bring ID? Yes. We require government or institution-issued identification (drivers license, passport, school ID card). Some institutions also require us to view a second piece of identification, so please check with your institution and come prepared. What can I bring into the exam? Only the specific exam materials (calculator, pencil, eraser) and resealable drink container such as water bottles are allowed in the testing room. You will not be permitted to bring in any electronic dictionaries, cell phones, MP3 players or other unauthorized material (ie. class notes, textbook), unless the exam instructions explicitly state these items are allowed. If you have questions regarding the exam materials allowed for your exam, please contact your institution. What can I expect at the Testing Centre? The SAIT Testing Centre consists of two classrooms; one strictly for computer-based exams and the other for paper-based exams. We do our best to maintain proper testing conditions as well as provide earplugs on request. There is also access to water fountains and restrooms if required. What do I do if I have a documented disability and require accommodations? The Testing Centre will accommodate all requests as best as possible. If you require a private room, extra time or adaptive technology, we will need proof of assessment from your institution's disability counselors. An accommodation memo can be e-mailed or mailed with the exam. All information provided is held under strict FOIP policies and used only for verification purposes. Please e-mail any other inquiries or call 403.210.4283 regarding taking an external exam at SAIT.
