Program Description English Language Foundations

The English Language Foundations (ELF) program provides English language upgrading for learners whose first language is not English. Students are placed into the program based on demonstrated proficiency in English, using the Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment. Most students use the ELF program as entry into SAIT career programs (direct entry requires demonstration of Benchmark 8 in all skill areas). The ELF curriculum encourages development in all language areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing, computer technology is incorporated into the program. - Five-level program
- Six start dates per year (eight week terms)
- Full and part-time studies; evening/weekend courses available
- Intensive, skills-focused approach
- Proficiency-based placement and advancement
- The ELF certificate is accepted in lieu of English 30 for most programs at SAIT
Admission requirements Intermediate-level English language skills (CLBA 4 in listening, speaking, reading and writing) are required to enter the ELF program. A minimum grade of 50% is needed in each course to advance to the next level.

What can I do after ELF? After successfully completing the ELF program, graduates will receive a SAIT Certificate of Participation for English Language Foundations. The majority of graduates are prepared for admission into SAIT career programs as completion of ELF level 4 is accepted as equivalent to English 30 for most programs at SAIT. Some students require Academic Upgrading courses to further prepare for admission into SAIT career programs. Please consult with individual career program coordinators to ensure you are aware of all entrance requirements. To be admitted into Academic Upgrading you are required to have a minimum of 60% in Grade 10 mathematics (excluding Math 14 and Math 16); a minimum of 60% in Grade 10 English; and English language proficiency CLBA level 8. Students in ELF Levels 3 and 4 may combine ELF coursework with Academic Upgrading subjects in math or science.
How will my English improve? Progress in the ELF program depends on the student's demonstration of proficiency. Instructors regularly assess student progress through classroom assignments, participation and examinations. Students who achieve a rating of 50% (D) in all subjects can be recommended for promotion to the next level. ELF is a fast track program. Students should be prepared to dedicate considerable time for study and to actively use their English outside of class time. SAIT career programs require academic appropriate English skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Contact English Language Foundations:
