On September 1, 2002, the Railway (Alberta) Act came into force requiring all Public, Amusement and Industrial railways within the province of Alberta to obtain an operating certificate by September 1, 2003. The act adopted a selected number of federal railway rules (CROR). The act governs all aspects of the provincial railways operations including rolling stock, track, crossings, training, operating procedure etc. Administration of the act is the responsibility of Alberta Transportation, located in Edmonton.
Since 2004, SAIT has certified about 500 individuals each year in courses such as Rail Car Safety and Securement, Track Inspection, Trackmobile Safety, Industrial Railway Operator in locations throughout Alberta. The Track Inspection Levels I & II re-certification courses are the first to be offered in a computer based format. Students must have completed their certification at SAIT in order to meet requirements for online re-certification.
