There are two levels of LOA certification: (1) LOA Basic Level and (2) LOA Advanced Level. Approximately eight courses must be completed for the Basic Level, and an additional three courses for the Advanced Level. The LOA certificate includes three specific mandatory courses: LIBR 200, MGMT 203, LIBR 235.

Courses are based on Instructional Units. A student must accumulate 18 IUs to complete the LOA Basic Level certification and 26 IUs to complete Advanced Level certification. To complete the required number of IUs for either level, courses may be chosen from the Library Information Technology (LIT) program. Upon completion of the Basic Level, approximately three LIT courses will be required to complete the Advanced Level certification. See the LIT section of this calendar for a list of the courses in the LIT diploma program. Students completing the Certificate first and then transferring to the Diploma may substitute ORGB-360 for MGMT-203. For additional information call the LIT program office at 403.284.7231.

LOA courses are worth two instructional units each. LIT courses are worth three instructional units each (except LIBR 200, which is two IUs). LIT courses can be substituted for any LOA course, but LOA courses cannot be used as credits in the LIT diploma program. You have five years to complete the Basic Level Certificate, and an additional two years from date of Basic Level certification to complete the Advanced Level.

Formal application is not necessary for the LOA distance education program. Simply register on a course-by-course basis, and then apply for your certificate upon completion of the course requirements.
