English Language Foundations - Six start dates per year (eight-week terms)
- Intensive, skills-focused approach
- Proficiency based placement and advancement
- Preparation for studies at SAIT
Program Description The English Language Foundations (ELF) program is designed to help both immigrants to Canada and international students develop the English proficiency needed to be successful at SAIT and in an English-speaking work environment. English Language Foundations helps many English as a second language learners get beyond ESL and find a place in the Canadian mainstream. The program is delivered on campus in eight-week semesters. Completion of a full-time program through all five levels takes a minimum of 40 weeks. All students must have a microphone equipped headset for Digital Language Lab instruction. Your Career Applicants may consider the ELF program if they plan to apply for a SAIT program but require English upgrading to meet program entry standards. Admission Requirements Selection There are no additional selection requirements. Admission to this program will be offered on a first-qualified, first-accepted basis. Student Success - Progress in the ELF program depends on the student’s demonstration of English skill proficiency. Instructors regularly assess student progress through classroom assignments, participation and examinations. Students, who achieve a rating of 50% in courses, can be recommended for promotion to the next level or at the completion of COMM-188 and SPCH-188.
- ELF is a fast-track program. Students should be prepared to dedicate considerable time for study and to actively use their English outside of class time. SAIT career programs require academic appropriate English skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Progression To progress through the program, students must attain a minimum score of 50% in all courses. Credentials - To qualify for an ELF certificate of achievement, students must complete both Level 5 courses, COMM-188 and, SPCH-188.
- Successful completion of the ELF program is used in lieu of English Language Arts 30-1 for most of SAIT’s programs. Please check for any specific admission requirements in the program you wish to apply to.
