Because of You - Donor Report 2011
Promising FuturesTM and You, Making History SAIT Polytechnic is undergoing a major transformation that is redefining the campus – construction of the new Trades and Technology Complex – and we have you to thank. In late June of 2011, the Promising Futures™ Campaign reached a fundraising milestone of $75 million towards the Trades and Technology Complex – the largest expansion in the history of SAIT. Many individuals, small businesses, corporations, SAIT students, faculty and staff helped make the capital phase of the campaign a resounding success. Every dollar you have invested helped realize our dream of creating a first class educational facility that will accommodate up to an additional 8,100 full and part-time students each year for years to come. Construction of the 740,000 sq. ft. Complex is on schedule and on budget and scheduled to open in 2012. The past year included two major celebrations marking multi-million dollar contributions to the Campaign by alumni. Their generosity means landmark buildings on campus will bear the names, in perpetuity, of industry leading graduates and entrepreneurs. Stan Grad Centre As June drew to a close, the Alumni and Development team celebrated a major gift from Stan and Jane Grad. They presented SAIT with $7 million which helped us reach the $75 million mark. Stan Grad is a Petroleum Engineering ’67 grad and Distinguished Alumnus who is a leader and entrepreneur in the two industries that drive Alberta’s economy – energy and agriculture. The Grads’ gift to SAIT inspired a Stampede style celebration dubbed “Stan – pede.” Mr. Grad says he has fond memories of SAIT. “My time on this campus – the hands-on education I received and the mentor I found were the catalysts I needed to move forward with my aspirations. It was during my time at SAIT where I gained confidence in myself and in my abilities.” To recognize the Grad’s generous gift, the Heart Building will be named the Stan Grad Centre. The SAIT Board of Governors also approved a request to name the library after Stan Grad’s former instructor and lifelong mentor, Reg Erhardt. When Stan Grad was a Petroleum Technology student, he nearly gave up on his education at SAIT. Erhardt urged him to stay and finish. In recognition, the family asked to have the library named the Reg Erhardt Library. Johnson-Cobbe Energy Centre On October 20th, 2010, hundreds of SAIT students, faculty and staff gathered in the Heart Atrium to celebrate a joint gift of $10 million from two couples – David and Barbara Johnson and Murray and Connie Cobbe. David Johnson, Petroleum Engineering Technology ’76 and Murray Cobbe, Petroleum Engineering, Reservoir ‘70 are alumni who are leaders in the energy industry. They said, “We have a real connection to SAIT as it represents the start of our careers. We truly believe that giving to education is the right thing to do and we, like other donors before us, know our contribution will be used purposefully.” In recognition of their generous gift, the west wing of the new Trades and Technology Complex will be named the Johnson-Cobbe Energy Centre. It is the future home of the MacPhail School of Energy. Beyond 75 | | In the coming year SAIT will shift its focus and expand the scope of the Campaign to raise money to support the educational needs of SAIT’s growing student population by: | - equipping students and faculty with the latest technology and best tools available
- ensuring faculty has resources to develop and expand programs while maintaining program excellence
- providing students with more scholarships and bursaries to enhance student success
Thank you for your past, present and future support of SAIT and the Promising Futures™ Campaign
