School of Manufacturing and Automation - Non-Destructive Testing

The largest facility of its kind in western Canada, SAIT's Non-Destructive Testing Centre is committed to providing first class training to those wishing to pursue a career in the NDT field. With over 100 years of experience between them, SAIT's instructors are eager to educate individuals, from technicians pursuing certification to those just entering the field, in six testing methods.

What is NDT?
In general terms, non-destructive testing or NDT is the inspection or measurement of a material without damage to the item.  Technically defined, non-destructive testing is the use of an interrogative medium to non-invasively determine the integrity of a material, component or structure.

Where is NDT used?
NDT is a service related trade industry that is the corner stone of quality and safety for virtually all other industries and business around the world. Non-destructive testing is used to ensure safety and quality, increase production and serviceability and to extend the life of equipment and systems components. An advantage of NDT examination is that many of the methods are extremely portable and testing can be done on-site on virtually any material. Many NDT inspections are performed during construction and prior to operation start-ups. The safety of the public is at stake in virtually all cases where NDT is applied.

What sectors of industry use NDT?
NDT is utilized in virtually every industry including oil and gas, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, food and drug, arts and history, and fabrication. Some of the more common places include products that we use on a daily basis. For example, the tires on your car, as well as every other part of the automobile, require NDT before entering the marketplace.

How do I become an NDT Technician?
In a global economy, NDT as a whole requires personnel qualified and certified to carry out the testing. It is absolutely imperative that the testing is administered by an independent party that is unbiased in its approach to certification. Of the many different certification schemes used around the world, Canada uses ISO9712. This provides the Canadian NDT industry with established guidelines for training and on-the-job experience. Following this, there are third party exams to be challenged in order to gain certification. When completed, the certifications belong to the technician within Canada.

Personnel are classified as Level I, Level II and Level III according to the following definitions.

Level I

Personnel who properly perform calibrations and specific techniques for processing pieces according to written instructions. Level I personnel carry out inspections under the supervision and instructions of a Level II or Level III technician.

Level II

Personnel are qualified to carry out inspections and interpret results in accordance with the established specifications. They are also responsible for the method or technique used as well as the interpretation.

Level III

Fully qualified personnel who are able to assume full responsibility of a test facility and staff.

SAIT's Non-Destructive Testing Centre offers training in six different NDT methods: Liquid Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Radiography, Ultrasonics, Eddy Current and Phased Array. Courses have been designed to instill the basic knowledge and skills of each method through comprehensive theory and lab practice in the Center's modernized classroom and lab facilities.

Non-Destructive Testing Workshops
Workshops provide hands-on experience for NDT Inspectors who are familiar with the theory and serve to familiarize CGSB exam candidates with the equipment that their exams will be conducted on. Workshops will be recognized by the CGSB as work experience. For more information please contact us at 403.284.8641.

Current Workshops available include:

  • Liquid Penetrant Workshop (INSP-180)
  • Magnetic Particle Workshop (INSP-182)
  • Radiography Workshop (INSP-184)
  • Ultrasonics Workshop (INSP-186)
  • Eddy Current Workshop (INSP-188)

Non-Destructive Testing Centre Exam Facilities
Training received by students will prepare them for the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) exams and may additionally meet the needs of other certification (SNT-TC-1A) requirements. CGSB exams (theory and practical) are offered through the Non-Destructive Testing Center's accredited exam facility. Applicants who intend to apply for CGSB NDT Certfication are responsible for verifying their own eligibility. Please contact Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) at 613.992.0115 for more information.

Additional CGSB exam fees are required for each type of NDT method being tested. For more information or to book a theory or practical exam, please call 403.210.4344.
