What apprenticeship programs do you offer?

The School of Manufacturing and Automation provides apprenticeship training for the Machinist, Millwright, Welding and Ironworker trades.

Do you offer Pre-apprenticeship programs?

Yes. Students can obtain first and second period apprenticeship Millwright and Welding training by taking the Millwrighting Technician or Welding Technician programs. Upon successful completion of either program, students may be eligible to write the necessary apprenticeship period exams. The Non-Destructive Testing Foundations (NNDT) program, similar to the Pre-apprenticeship programs, is a fast track into a career as a Non-Destructive Testing Technician.

Who do I contact to confirm my apprenticeship eligibility?

Apprenticeship eligibility must be confirmed through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).  In Calgary, call 403.297.6457 or visit the AIT website to locate the office nearest to you.

 Do you offer evening or weekend courses?

Continuing Education programs are offered at various times throughout the year. Courses run from 6 to 48 hours in total length depending on the subject. Times, dates and availability will vary. For the most current information on upcoming courses it is best to refer to the Continuing Education listings.

Can I receive credit for courses based on experience?

Credit for previous education or experience must be done on a case by case basis and is dependent on the program or course. Individuals may contact the Prior Learning Assessment Centre for more information. Some Continuing Education courses require approval from the Academic Chair. This information will be listed under the prerequisites for individual programs.

Where do I find my booklist?

Booklists are available from the SAIT Bookstore. Diploma program students may purchase books from the Bookstore located in the Heart Building at the Main Campus. All Apprenticeship, Welding Technician and Millwright Technician students must purchase their modules from F-Stores located on the first floor of the Thomas Riley Building.

The cost for books may fluctuate each year. Please contact the SAIT Bookstore for the most current pricing.

 I do not live in Calgary, can you assist with locating housing?

Students interested in student housing must contact Student Services for information about residence and housing options.

When can I apply for a full-time program?

Individuals can begin to apply for the full-time, fall start programs at the prior year's Fall Open House (i.e. October 2011 for September 2012 start). Applications will continue to be accepted until the program start date provided seats are available. More information is available via the step-by-step tutorial for applications.

I am from another country. How do I receive credit for previous education or work experience?

Individuals should contact the Prior Learning and Skills Assessment Centre in order to have your experience evaluated. The English Language Foundations program is another alternative for individuals whose first language is not English to explore.

I am missing an entry pre-requisite and need to upgrade before I can apply to my program of choice. Where do I begin?

I’m having problems with a course, is tutoring available?

Students may contact their instructors for additional help with their courses. If this is not an option however, tutoring is available at the Learning Skills Centre. Call 403.774.4669 or 403.284.7050 for more information.

Can I take classes by distance or online?

Courses available online or by Distance Education will vary depending on the program.  It is suggested that you talk with your Academic Chair prior to registering to ensure that the course will be equivalent to your program content.

How can I obtain a copy of my transcript or parchment?

Transcripts and parchments are issued through the Student Services department. Unofficial copies of your transcripts can be obtained via mySAIT.
