The wages are good with great benefits." ~ Diane Becker Supervisor, Central Processing Mineral Springs Hospital (Banff, AB) Students learn: SAIT's 5-month Sterile Processing Technician program provides training for the critical role of packaging, sterilizing, storing, and handling of sterile supplies, with a focus on infection control and aseptic techniques. This 21 week program is offered in September and in January and includes: - Classroom instruction with integrated practical learning experiences
- 400 hours of fieldwork/practicum (arranged by SAIT). The fieldwork/practicum provides non-paid experience working in a clinical environment. It allows graduates to develop the necessary manual skills, technical knowledge, and clinical experience required.
Is this program right for me? Some sterile processing technicians have been trained on the job but most employers look for applicants who have certification in central sterile processing (or equivalent). Program Flexibility This program is 5-months in length. Starting dates are in September and in January. The Sterile Processing Technician program is also offered through distance education. Twelve weeks are completed at SAIT and the remaining nine weeks are at a clinical site. Transfer Options Following this program, individuals may write the International Association of Health and Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) exam to achieve the Central Service Technician Certificate. Career Outlook Set yourself on the path to a successful career in sterile processing. In 2007, 92% of SAIT's Sterile Processing Technician program graduates found employment. The career outlook for sterile processing technicians is excellent. Over 7,100 Albertans are employed in positions which support health services. The job opportunities are expected to grow by a yearly average of 2.9%. Alberta’s Occupational Demand and Supply Outlook (2007-2017) forecasts supply shortages in technical occupations in health care until 2017. What does a Sterile Processing Technician do? Imagine the huge variety and amount of surgical instruments and tools required for surgical procedures. Sterile processing technicians provide a critical service in the healthcare environment. These technicians focus on infection control and aseptic techniques to: - sort, disassemble, clean and disinfect trays, instruments, carts, supplies and equipment
- select and use appropriate cleaning methods
- operate and maintain cleaning, sanitizing and sterilization equipment
- ensure use of effective and safe sterilization procedures
- provide instrument sets for surgical procedures and case carts for booked and emergency surgery
- inventory, select and replenish supplies to medical / surgical carts on a regular basis, and monitor quota levels and changes in demand levels
- report problems regarding availability of instruments and supplies
- use computers to order supplies, and process and maintain records
What will my job be like? Sterile processing technicians: - Work in busy healthcare environments which typically operate 24 hours a day. Technicians work shifts that may include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Follow safety precautions to reduce the risk of exposure to infectious diseases and injury from hot surfaces
- Are constantly moving and on their feet
- May routinely lift items weighing up to 10 kilograms
Qualified sterile processing technicians may write the International Association of Health and Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) exam to achieve the Central Service Technician Certificate.
