School of Health and Public Safety - Dental Clinic

Students at SAIT Polytechnic offer cost-effective dental services at our on-campus clinic from January to April each year. The SAIT Dental Clinic operates to provide our Dental Assisting students with practical experience. The services offered are intended to complement the services provided in a dental office.
Our students provide a professional and relaxed atmosphere with an emphasis on oral hygiene instruction and prevention of oral diseases. The clinic offers two main services: x-rays and tooth polishing with a fluoride application. The clinic best serves the needs of children aged 4 to 17. Although our services do not replace regular dental examinations, they can be an adjunct to help families that can not visit a dentist on a regular basis, and can significantly reduce the cost of your next visit with a family dentist.

Dental Services and Fees The following services are provided by Dental Assisting students: X-RAYS - X-rays are processed and provided to your dental office for interpretation.
- We do not read the x-rays at SAIT. Your dentist can prescribe the x-rays required or the dentist on staff at SAIT can determine which x-rays are required.
TOOTH POLISHING AND FLUORIDE APPLICATION - We offer a thorough and fun dental experience for children aged 4 to 17.
- Appointments are approximately 2 to 3 hours long and focus on education and prevention of oral diseases.
- A dental exam is not provided, and your appointment at the SAIT Dental Clinic is not meant to replace your regular dental examination with your family dentist.
- Adults are also welcome in the tooth polishing and fluoride clinics, however anyone over the age of 18 must complete a scaling appointment with their family dentist no more than 4 weeks prior to their appointment at SAIT.
- Please call the SAIT Dental Clinic for details.
FEES $10 per person per service $25 for a family of three or more per service

Frequently Asked Questions What services are provided? The SAIT Dental Clinic offers limited low-cost dental services and is open to the public from January to April each year. All services are provided by dental assisting students under the supervision of a licensed dental health care professional. Our teaching clinic strives to work with your regular oral health care provider, as the services our students can provide are limited. You will need to see a private dental office for most of your oral health care needs. The following services are provided at SAIT by Dental Assisting students: - X-rays for ages 4 years and older.
- Selective polish (cleaning), oral hygiene instruction, and topical fluoride treatments for ages 4 to 17. (Polish services for adults may be considered, however adults must be seen by an oral health care provider no longer than one month prior to this appointment for an examination and all dental scaling.)
What is the cost? Fees will be charged for all services at a reduced rate. Payment must be made at each appointment for the treatment received. We only accept cash or cheque. Current prices are: $10 per person per service $25 for a family of three or more per service How long are the appointments? Teaching takes time, and patients coming to the SAIT Dental Clinic should be aware that services may take longer than at a dental office. X-ray appointments may take up to 2 hours and polish appointments 2 ½ to 3 hours. What is a polish treatment? Polishing is a technique used to remove dental plaque and stains from the outer surfaces of the teeth. A polish is not a substitute for a complete dental cleaning that removes the hard deposits (calculus) from the teeth. What is a topical fluoride treatment? Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water. Topical fluoride is placed on the outer surfaces of the teeth to help prevent tooth decay. What is dental scaling? Dental scaling is the removal of the hard deposits from the teeth. Dental scaling must be performed by a dentist, dental hygienist or dental assistant with additional training. Can I get my teeth scaled at SAIT? The Preventive Dentistry Module is a post graduate dental assisting program that offers limited scaling to the public, during the summer months. Patients must be screened prior to being offered an appointment. Can I take my x-rays with me? Patients may pick up their x-rays within 5 to 7 business days after their appointment.
