Hiring a Bachelor of Applied Petroleum Technology (BAPT) Practicum Student
MacPhail School of Energy

BAPT practicum  students arrive career-ready with a wealth of education and experience to operate as fully-fledged members of your petroleum engineering technology team, and have the management skills and training to progress above a purely technical role in the industry.

Program Overview
Designed specifically with the needs of the Alberta oil and gas industry, the BAPT degree combines a solid understanding of theory and analytical skills, with an emphasis on hands-on practical applications of the concepts learned in the classroom.

BAPT Student Competencies
Students complete 800 hours of course work in the core areas of learning including: financial control, project management, geology, process operations, reservoir, drilling, process design using computers, instrumentation and process control, and oilsands mining and recovery.

Upon completion of the course work, students also participate in an 800-hour credit practicum work experience in industry.

Reservoir Engineering

  • Estimation of oil and gas reserves in field reservoirs
  • Planning of recovery operations for waterflooding an oil reservoir
  • Comparison of recovery factors for different fields
  • Investigation of reservoir damage mechanisms
  • Evaluation of well pressure tests

Production Engineering

  • Technical support for separator and treater chemical sales
  • Evaluation of sucker rod pump efficiencies
  • Fracturing and acidizing field operations
  • Production system debottlenecking

Drilling Engineering

  • Planning and drilling of deviated and horizontal wells
  • Drilling and completion for thermal wells
  • Process and Instrumentation Engineering
  • Design and construction of process equipment
  • Planning instrumentation for skid mounted field equipment
  • Evaluation of pipelining systems

Project Management and Project Evaluation

  • Use of computer-based software for project management
  • Critical path programming or on-time, on-budget completion of projects
  • Financial control systems and budgets for project management
  • Use of software including HYSYS, Black-Oil Simulation, AccuMap, PIPE-FLO, WellFlo, and Peep
  • Evaluation of project viability with various economic criteria

Environmental Control

  • Preparation of environmental impact studies
  • Planning field operations taking account of environmental regulations and requirements
  • Representing regulatory bodies to ensure compliance of field operations with environmental stipulations

Research and Development

  • Participating in research studies as part of a ream to investigate new methods and procedures in process, production, drilling and reservoir engineering
  • Carrying our core displacement tests to investigate reservoir sensitivity to injected fluids
  • Implementation of new instrumentation and computer control systems in field operations

Supplementary courses in petroleum economics, business finance, safety standards, team skills, and hands-on industry software training, further equips graduates for a career in the oil and gas industry.

Students must demonstrate English language proficiency prior to being accepted into the program.
