What is GIS?

 Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a rapidly growing field that is used in a wide variety of industry sectors. In essence, GIS is a computer-based science and technology that combines the visual clarity of maps with the analytical capabilities of databases. The uses of GIS vary depending on the industry sector:

  • In some cases GIS is used primarily as a support tool, helping companies map and manage their assets;
  • In other cases, GIS is used as a powerful decision-making tool capable of presenting very effective solutions to problems;
  • In the more advance uses of GIS, analysts can create models that help them predict future trends.

GIS can be used anywhere geography based data and information are used. In recent years GIS has become a standard in numerous industry sectors including: archaeology, business and marketing, environmental science, oil and gas, real estate, urban planning, etc. GIS is used in both the public and private sectors including government agencies at the municipal, provincial and federal level and private industry from small businesses to large corporations.

A GIS is a complex system that integrates multiple components. A typical GIS includes components such as computer hardware, software, data and skilled professionals. A competent GIS professional should understand well the nature of GIS software and data. In addition, a competent GIS professional should also have knowledge of related disciplines such as: cartography, computer programming, databases, global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing, and statistics.
