School of Construction - Frequently Asked Questions

When are labs open and homework rooms available for student use? There is a schedule posted outside each of the computer rooms and the drafting rooms indicating when classes are scheduled and when the room is free. How do I make changes with my schedule, drop or add classes, etc? The first two weeks of your classes is the drop/add period. You will need to see your Academic Chair. Make an appointment by coming to N322 or by phoning 284-8367. Can I get out of a class, or get a different instructor? You are generally required to take courses (and instructors) as programmed. This programming is based on subject content and sequencing, and therefore, switching sections seriously disrupts normal student progress. Who can I talk to about a problem with a course or an instructor? If you have a problem with your instructor, or your instructor’s course, start there. You should feel free to approach your instructor, who may not even be aware that you are experiencing a problem. Try to discuss the problem objectively and to work out a solution with your instructor. If you have discussed the problem with your instructor, and the problem is still not resolved, you should go to the Program Academic Chair. If the problem can not be resolved at that level, you should then make an appointment to see the Dean of the School of Construction. Few problems are serious enough to require resolution at the level of the Dean. Most difficulties can be worked out with your instructor and/or Academic Chair. In any case, don't let a contentious issue get in the way of your progress and studies. Come in and talk to us; it does everyone good to get the other's point of view. When do classes start and end? Fall intake classes start in August and go until the end of April of the following year. The winter intake begins the Monday immediately following New Year’s Day in January until the middle of August. Do all the School of Construction programs have a January intake? No. The Civil Engineering Technology program and the Engineering Design and Drafting Technology program are the only programs that have a January intake in the School of Construction. What is the length of your programs? The School of Construction's new Bachelor of Science in Construction Project Management is a four year degree program. The School of Construction's full time diploma programs are two years in length. Our certificates can run from six to ten months.
