School of Business - News

There are always new and exciting things happening in the School of Business. Here are just a few examples of what we have going on:

Follow Your Passion, WestJet CEO Advises Business Students

On Friday, December 9, nearly 100 Bachelor of Applied Business Administration (Accounting) students crammed into a classroom to catch an exclusive presentation from Clive Beddoe, Chairman of the Board and one of the founders of WestJet. Mr. Beddoe shared humorous stories of trials and tribulations before his WestJet success, which included ventures in real estate and for-profit education.

Students were also treated to the fascinating story of the origins of WestJet and some strategic background on WestJet's business success, including key performance indicators in the airline business and the model that allows WestJet to remain profitable while other airlines struggle.

To be successful, Beddoe advised students to follow their passion and not be afraid to take risks.

Dozens Earning Designations in 2011

SAIT students have an excellent track record for going on to successfully earn their professional accounting designations, and 2011 is no different. This year, 63 SAIT alumni earned their CGA designation – which accounts for about one third of the number of CGA graduates who earned their education in Alberta. We also have a growing number of CMA graduates – this year a dozen former SAIT students took to the stage at the CMA convocation. Congratulations to all!

School of Business launches a convenient, new mobile website

Getting to class just got easier.

This September, incoming full-time and part-time School of Business students will have a handy new way to access SAIT information: on their mobile phones or tablets. The new mobile website includes contact information, key dates, a campus map, hours for food outlets on campus, and many other resources. This exclusive site can only be accessed by School of Business students with a Student ID number via the School of Business student portal: sb.sait.ca.

AIM Student Becoming Social Media Celebrity

It was only last summer that one of our graduates placed first worldwide in an international Microsoft Office competition, and already another AIM student is looking to take over that top spot. The only difference is that, this time, she'll be posting her training experience online for the world to see on "Career Factor," a social media-based reality show created by Microsoft.

After being nominated by AIM instructor Janine Violini, Caroline Weilinger, Class of 2011, was selected as one of nine individuals from across the world to be featured in the online program. Over the next few months, she will tell her story using a variety of social media tools (blogging, videos, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to name a few), as she gears up for the Certiport 2011 Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office taking place July 31 to August 3 .
