The Board of Governors of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology was established under the authority of the Technical Institutes Act, as amended, of the Province of Alberta (O.C. 406/82, March 31, 1982).

"A Board subject to this Act, has the power to manage and control the Institute and its property, revenue, business and affairs. It shall determine the general policies with respect to the organization, administration and operation of the Technical Institute and the courses or programs of instruction or training provided by the Board"
