 | | Morgan Chetty | | Morgan Chetty was born in Durban, South Africa during the apartheid era. Upon completing high school he entered into an apprenticeship as a Tool & Die Maker, with a local manufacturer of rain water and stainless steel products, ranging from water tanks to surgical equipment. He completed a five-year apprenticeship in three and one half years. Strongly desiring to advance his trade experiences and career, he decided to move abroad because of the limitations and restriction imposed on his freedom and mobility by apartheid laws. The journey brought him to Toronto, Canada in the early 1970 with a suitcase and one hundred and eighty dollars in his pocket. On the second day of his arrival he was employed as a Tool Maker with Kramer Manufacturing Ltd. His strong inclination to learn as much as possible in this trade equipped him to move through several companies in the greater Toronto area, acquiring skills and knowledge in the automotive and general manufacturing sector. During the summer of 1976 he arrived in Edmonton where the economic prosperity in the Province allowed him to secure employment immediately in a local machine shop, specializing in general machining, tools, jigs, dies, and plastic injection molds. In 1979 wanting to advance his carer and fulfil a childhood goal of achieving a University education, he enrolled in the B.Ed. program at the University of Alberta with a primary focus in Industrial & Vocational education. Upon graduating in 1981 he was immediately employed by NAIT as an instructor in the machinist Program. After 25 years in Edmonton he, his wife Val Hoey and daughter Fiona relocated to Calgary. Morgan has been with SAIT since 2001 teaching in the School of Manufacturing and Automation, as a Machinist and Technology instructor. Morgan has always been interested and committed to the big picture of post- secondary education. He has been an active member in Faculty Associations and the Provincial Association, ACIFA. He was involved very closely with the international anti-apartheid movements. He worked locally with CUSO, labour movements, churches and educational organizations in promoting an understanding of the apartheid system and civic engagement. Morgan has a strong passion for learning as a life-long commitment. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Leadership Studies through Royal Road University.
