SAIT students inducted into honour society

May 7, 2010, Calgary, Alberta – SAIT Polytechnic became the newest member institution of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the largest honour society in North America, at a chartering ceremony on May 7. Ten SAIT students were inducted into the society at the event.

SAIT is the first polytechnic in Canada and the third Canadian post-secondary to become a member of the society. Established in 1918, the society has more than 1,200 chapters in the United States, Canada and Germany. SAIT’s chapter of the society will be called Beta Sigma Tau.

The society recognizes the academic achievements of two-year college students. To receive membership, students must generally have a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

“We are very proud to have SAIT join this world-renowned honour student society,” says Irene Lewis, President and CEO of SAIT Polytechnic. “SAIT’s affiliation with Phi Theta Kappa shows that we have high standards for our curriculum and teaching.”

Members of Phi Theta Kappa may apply for more than $36 million in transfer scholarships, provided exclusively to society members. In addition, Phi Theta Kappa offers numerous opportunities for members to develop in honours programs, leadership skills, and provide service to their communities.

“Phi Theta Kappa membership will provide valuable opportunities to SAIT students who will be entering today’s competitive job markets or for those who choose to pursue further study,” says Lewis.

SAIT Polytechnic is one of Canada’s most exciting destinations for post-secondary education, offering more than 100 career programs that position people for success in technology, trades and business. A leader in innovation, SAIT also collaborates with industry on applied research and delivers corporate training worldwide. SAIT is a member of Polytechnics Canada and one of Alberta’s Top 50 Employers for 2011.
