SAIT hockey coach all time Canadian post-secondary victories leaderMonday, March 8, 2010, Calgary, Alberta — SAIT Trojans men’s hockey team certainly has a coach to be proud of. Head coach Ken Babey has recently been named Canada’s leader in wins and games coached for Canadian college/university men's hockey. The recently accomplished ACAC hockey best-of-five semi final series between the Trojans and the Vikings was a memorable one for Babey, and certainly one he won’t forget. In the series opener on February 26th, Babey became the first Canadian post secondary hockey coach to reach the 700 game mark in regular season and post season action. On February 27th the Trojans battled and beat out the Vikings in game two, making it Babey’s 427th win, tying the impressive stat with University of Alberta coach Clare Drake, who had originally set the high record after 28 campaigns with the Golden Bears. Babey said Drake has always been an icon in the hockey world. “He set the standard for college and university coaches.” On March 5th, in the series finale, Babey took sole possession of the record after 23 seasons with the Trojans. “It’s an honor,” said Babey. “It’s a good example of all the hard work we’ve put in over the years - coaches, players, and staff.” Babey has compiled a winning percentage of .640, 359 wins out of 581 ACAC regular season games, 63 of 111 ACAC playoff games, and 6 of 10 CCAA national games. Babey’s men kept a high standard for themselves this year, put in lots of hard work and stayed consistent. One of the achievements that Babey said made such a difference was never losing two games in a row this year, the hard work paid off for Babey and his team.
