SAIT graduate is world’s best at Microsoft Word

Friday, August 13, 2010, Calgary, Alberta – Emily Daubert, recent graduate of SAIT Polytechnic’s Administrative Information Management program, now has a world-class accomplishment to include on her resumé. Daubert was named the World Champion for Microsoft Office Word 2007 during a celebration ceremony on Wednesday in Park City, Utah, where national winners from 51 countries competed in the championship round for a grand prize scholarship fund of $6,500.

Daubert, who rose to the top of more than 115,000 competitors, was ecstatic with the win. “I am the first person from Canada to win this competition,” she said. “I am thankful for the support and the encouragement I received by those around me and who kept telling me I could do this, it was not impossible."

In the final round of competition, Word competitors participated in timed, unique tests to demonstrate their ability to create, customize and organize documents using formatting and visual content appropriate for the information presented in Microsoft Word.

“The competition was very intense,” said Janine Violini, SAIT Polytechnic instructor and Daubert’s trainer for the competition.

Violini was in Utah when Emily was named world champion. “I jumped straight out of my chair when Emily’s name was announced,” said Violini. "We were thrilled to have Emily win the national championship, but her world championship has made us realize the skill set of our graduates is second-to- none. Our graduates will use the Microsoft Office suite daily in their careers and their level of productivity will significantly benefit their employers.”

The Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office is sponsored by Certiport, the leading certification solution provider for the global workforce and academic markets, and CCI Learning Solutions Inc.

SAIT’s Administrative Information Management (AIM) two-year diploma program is the only one of its kind in Canada. The program is a mix of business theory courses, practical information management and hands-on computer applications training. AIM is designed to provide graduates with the confidence and skills they need to succeed in business settings. Graduates have a firm understanding of how to gather, analyze and present various types of business information.
