SAIT Trojans on a winning streakMarch 22, 2010, Calgary, Alberta – It has been an impressive season so far for SAIT Polytechnic’s Trojans athletics teams. Earlier this month the men’s volleyball and women’s basketball teams won Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) gold, with the men’s volleyball team going on to win silver at Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships. This weekend Trojans athletics added another Provincial title and silver medal at Nationals to their list of accomplishments. The Trojans men’s basketball team was awarded the silver medal on Saturday night at the CCAA National Men’s Basketball Championship, hosted by SAIT. After a well-played tournament, the Trojans lost in the gold medal match to the UNBC Timberwolves 96-63. Third-year Trojans head coach Mike Stevens says that although the loss was disappointing, the team had an amazing tournament to end the season. “In the last couple of minutes, there, in our huddle, I told the guys: ‘You can’t hang your heads. We had a fantastic season.’ It just so happens that we finished as the second-best team in the country this year.” More information on the men’s basketball championship can be found at www.sait2010.ca. Over at the SAIT Arena, the Trojans men’s hockey team capped off a successful season with a first place finish at the ACAC Championship Series. The win marks their fourth straight men’s hockey title – making them only the second team in ACAC history to win four straight men’s hockey titles. The Trojans beat Concordia University College of Alberta Thunder 4-1 in the fifth and final game of the series. Ken Babey, who was recently named Canada’s leader in wins and games coached for Canadian college/university men's hockey says it was a hard-fought battle. “Tonight, it took everything our guys had in them to beat that (Concordia) team. To win four (championships) in a row, that means a lot of hard work by a lot of people over the years. I’m just so proud of the guys. That’s why I keep doing it -- to see the looks on the guys’ faces on nights like tonight. It sure doesn’t get old.” Babey, SAIT’s Athletic Director, says the men’s hockey victory tops off a winning season for Trojans athletics overall. “With the success of all our athletics teams this year, it was nice to see the men’s hockey team come through, too.”
