SAIT Olympic torch runner grateful for the experienceFebruary 16, 2010, Calgary, Alberta – Now that the Olympics are underway, SAIT employee Jim Szautner is reflecting on the memories of running with the Olympic torch – memories that will stay with him forever. There was one moment in particular that Szautner says was uniquely patriotic. “The school we met in was at a French immersion school. Part way through our briefing the national anthem was played to start off the school day. Everyone in the meeting stopped what they were doing and stood up for the anthem, which was sung completely in French.” Szautner is the Academic Chair of SAIT’s diesel equipment technician and heavy equipment programs. He carried the Olympic torch through the town of Beaumont, Alberta the morning of January 15. He says he wasn’t nervous about the run but that the moments leading up to his turn were very special. “There was definite excitement in the shuttle bus with the other torch bearers. We could see people lining the streets; they were wearing their red mittens and waving at the bus.” With the Olympics now entering the first full week of competition Szautner says he feels honoured to have been involved in the torch relay. “Knowing that I participated in a small part of the Olympic Games will be something I cherish forever.”
