2010-11 academic year begins

Monday, September 7, 2010, Calgary, Alberta – Students are all moved into residence and orientation is underway. It’s the start of a new academic year at SAIT Polytechnic.

More than 10,000 students and apprentices will attend full-time classes at SAIT this semester through one of SAIT’s eight academic schools. While application numbers remain consistently high, certain programs in particular saw increased demand this year over last.

“What we saw this year was a rise in applications for specific programs, such as our Broadcast Systems Technology and Meat Operations and Management diplomas,” says Gord Nixon, Vice President Academic. “This is great news for our industry partners who hire SAIT graduates from these in-demand programs.”

Continuing education students will also begin courses at SAIT this week. Nearly 5,000 students will take part-time courses ranging from literature and composition to scotch tasting. While some students enroll in continuing education courses for lifestyle reasons, like the chance to learn how to decorate a cake or give a pet CPR, many more register at SAIT to advance in their careers.

“SAIT’s continuing education courses can help people move ahead in their current jobs or allow them to launch new careers by obtaining a certificate or other credential,” says Nixon. “We have a wide variety of courses and delivery options to suit individual needs.”

The choices for students are plentiful at SAIT. With 65 certificate, diploma and applied degree programs as well as 31 apprenticeship programs, 300 distance education courses and more than 900 continuing education courses, SAIT offers training and education to more than 76,000 registrants each year.

SAIT Polytechnic is one of Canada’s most exciting destinations for post-secondary education, offering more than 100 career programs that position people for success in technology, trades and business. A leader in innovation, SAIT also collaborates with industry on applied research and delivers corporate training worldwide. SAIT is a member of Polytechnics Canada and one of Alberta’s Top 50 Employers for 2011.
