SAITExecutive

SAIT is under the administration of a five-member Executive Management team:

Irene Lewis Irene Lewis, President and CEO
SAIT Polytechnic

Named one of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women, Irene Lewis became President and CEO of SAIT Polytechnic in 1998.

Irene then set out to transform SAIT into Canada’s premier polytechnic, while changing society’s perceptions of the value of trades and technology education along the way.  Today, SAIT is globally-recognized as a leader in energy and petroleum training and as a trailblazer in applied research and innovation.

In 2007, Irene introduced a 100-year capital expansion plan that aimed to triple SAIT’s student body.  She has led a campus transformation, overseeing the restoration of the historic Heritage Hall, the construction of the Heart Building, the Clayton Carroll Automotive Centre, the Art Smith Aero Centre, Begin Tower and an underground parking garage.

She is also the driving force behind the new $400-million Trades and Technology Complex, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, and its $100-million capital campaign.  In 2010, SAIT received a $15-million gift in support of the Complex – the largest personal philanthropic donation ever given to a Canadian community college or polytechnic institution.

Under Irene’s leadership, SAIT’s annual employee survey has shown significant improvements in employee satisfaction. SAIT was also named one of Alberta’s Top 50 Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc. for 2010 and 2011, and one of Alberta’s Best Workplaces by Alberta Venture magazine in 2010.

Irene was instrumental in bringing the international WorldSkills competition to Calgary in 2009.  Symbolizing the pinnacle of excellence in skills training, this event ignited a passion for trades and technology careers in a new generation of young Albertans.

Prior to joining SAIT, Irene was president of a college in Edmonton and led its transition to an independent board-governed institution.  She also worked in Singapore for more than five years, where she had a central role in shaping that country's vision for workforce development.  Irene has written textbooks, hosted an educational television series and taught in primary, secondary and post-secondary systems.

As a respected ambassador for Alberta’s post-secondary community, Irene is known for her talent in building relationships, her focused strategic leadership, her work ethic, generosity and community spirit.

In 2010, Irene received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary – its highest honour. She was presented with the Alberta Congress Board’s 2011 Distinguished Workplace Leader Award, the Chair Academy’s 2009 International Exemplary Leader Award and was named the 2009 Woman of the Year by Consumers’ Choice of Calgary.  Irene was recognized with the 2008 Distinguished Leadership Award from the Council of Advancement and Support of Education, named a 2008 Woman of Vision by Global Calgary, one of Alberta’s Most Respected Corporate Leaders in 2007, and one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential Citizens in 2005.  She has received the Premier’s Gold Award of Excellence, a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and a University of Alberta Alumni Honour Award.

Irene is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta and serves on the board of directors of Polytechnics Canada and the Post-Secondary International Network. From its inception in 2008 until 2012, she was a member of the Alberta Health Services board, responsible for overseeing the province’s health care system. Irene has chaired the Alberta Economic Development Authority’s Energy Resource committee and has served in advisory roles with many other organizations.
